PE film is the most widely used film in the construction industry, available in various types like LDPE and HDPE.
While they might appear to differ only in color or thickness, their properties vary significantly. This guide outlines key information and labeling details to help you choose the right plastic films for construction projects.
Meaning of construction film labels
Construction films are labeled with a combination of letters and numbers, such as PE 02 film.
- The letters indicate the material (e.g., PE for polyethylene).
- The numbers refer to the thickness (e.g., “02” means 0.2 mm or 200 microns).
There is no universal rule for the required thickness of films for specific applications. This is determined based on the customer’s specific needs. Thicker films, 0.09–0.2 mm (90–200 microns), are recommended for road construction and dam slopes. Thinner films, up to 0.05 mm (50 microns), are suitable for covering surfaces or laying on floors.
Polyethylene films are commonly referred to with labels such as HDPE, MDPE, and LDPE, indicating the density of polyethylenes:
- HDPE: High-Density Polyethylene,
- MDPE: Medium-Density Polyethylene,
- LDPE: Low-Density Polyethylene.
There is a special variant of polyethylene (PE) films known as electrostatic discharge (ESD) films.
Types of construction films
PE construction film (polyethylene)
PE construction film (polyethylene) is one of the most commonly used types of construction film. It is lightweight, durable, and waterproof, making it ideal for foundational work, soil protection layers, building covers, and cladding. Their flexibility allows for easy shaping and adaptation to various construction environments.
HDPE construction film (high-density polyethylene)
HDPE (high-density polyethylene) construction film is known for its strong mechanical properties and resistance. It is commonly used in foundational work as a soil barrier and in waterproofing systems around roads and structures. HDPE film is also highly resistant to weather and chemicals, offering long-lasting protection for construction projects.
MDPE construction film (medium-density polyethylene)
MDPE (medium-density polyethylene) construction film is known for its excellent impact resistance and flexibility. It is commonly used in earthworks and for leveling surfaces, as well as a waterproof layer for tanks, pools, and tunnels.
LDPE construction film (low-density polyethylene)
LDPE (low-density polyethylene) construction film is flexible and easy to shape, making it ideal for landscaping, building protection covers, and foundational construction. Its excellent waterproof properties make it suitable for drainage and protection on construction sites.
ESD construction film (electrostatic discharge)
ESD (electrostatic discharge) construction film prevents static electricity buildup and discharges. These films are crucial in environments where static discharge could damage sensitive electronic devices or create dangerous conditions.
Choosing the right color for construction films
The color of construction films is usually not important unless transparency is required (e.g., for cover films). In such cases, transparent films are recommended.
When transparency isn’t required, the color of the film is typically defined by the recycling process. Recycled films are often processed from mixed-colored materials, resulting in a grayish-brown color often dyed black for a cleaner appearance.
Available sizes of construction films
Construction films come in various sizes to suit different projects. The width (or height is case of stand mountable films) ranges from 4 to 16 meters. The length can reach up to 200 meters for films up to 4 meters wide and 100 meters for wider variants.
Long lengths are ideal for waterproofing and dust-proofing applications, as they allow for large, continuous coverage without the need for welding or gluing, providing seamless protection.
